Why ASA for Outdoor Applications?

Most 3D printing materials degrade rapidly in direct sunlight. PLA can warp and become brittle within weeks to months. ABS yellows and cracks within months of outdoor exposure. ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) was specifically engineered for outdoor use — it resists UV degradation, maintains color stability, and withstands rain, temperature cycling, and humidity without losing mechanical performance.

Chatelet Manufacturing is based in Orlando, Florida — one of the most UV-intense environments in the continental United States. We understand outdoor durability requirements firsthand and recommend ASA as our go-to material for any application that will see sun exposure. Our 80+ printer fleet produces ASA parts with excellent surface quality and consistent mechanical properties across production batches.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will ASA parts last outdoors in Florida sun?
ASA is specifically designed for outdoor use and maintains its color and mechanical properties for extended periods of direct UV exposure — significantly outperforming ABS, PETG, and PLA. In Florida's high-UV environment, ASA is the only FDM thermoplastic we recommend for permanent outdoor installations. PLA, ABS, and PETG all degrade significantly within 3–12 months in direct Florida sun.
Is ASA waterproof?
ASA itself doesn't absorb water, but 3D printed parts have micro-gaps between layers that can allow water ingress. For truly waterproof enclosures, we recommend wall thicknesses of 2mm+ with optimized print settings that minimize layer gaps. We can also apply post-processing treatments like vapor smoothing or coating for applications requiring IP-rated water resistance.
What colors are available in ASA?
We stock ASA in black, white, and gray as standard colors. Custom colors are available on request with minimum order quantities. ASA also takes paint well if you need exact color matching for architectural or branding applications.
Can ASA handle the heat inside a sealed outdoor enclosure?
Yes. ASA's heat deflection temperature of ~98°C means it can handle internal temperatures in sealed outdoor enclosures, even in direct Florida sun where internal temps can reach 70–80°C. For extreme heat applications, we can recommend high-temp nylon or PEEK alternatives.
