How to Choose a Production 3D Printing Service
Anyone can print a part once. The real question is who can reliably deliver the right process, material, tolerances, and documentation as your part moves from prototype into repeat production. Here's the scorecard.
The short version: Score suppliers on seven things — process/material fit, tolerance capability, quality process, factory-direct vs marketplace, lead time, traceability/IP, and whether they give honest guidance. The single fastest test: ask for a first article in your material and orientation before committing to a run. A supplier who welcomes that is one who can hold what your part needs.

Process & material fit
Does the supplier run the right process for your part, and stock engineering materials matched to your load case and environment — not just PLA and PETG? For functional parts, look for filled nylons, ASA, and polycarbonate as everyday production materials.
Tolerance capability
What do they hold as-printed, and can they machine critical features to tighter tolerance? A supplier who can talk specifics (±0.2mm, fit/clearance values, post-machining) understands production. See our tolerances guide for the numbers to ask about.
Quality process & consistency
Do they offer first-article inspection before a full run? How do they keep batch #10 matching batch #1? Locked process parameters and dimensional verification are the signs of real production discipline, not one-off printing.
Factory-direct or marketplace?
Do they make the part in-house, or broker it to a rotating network? For repeat production, factory-direct means consistency, cost transparency, and a direct line to the maker. See marketplace vs direct.
Committed lead time
Not a vague “fast” — a committed date for your specific part and quantity. Ask what turnaround looks like for both first order and reorders.
Traceability & IP handling
For sensitive or regulated work: is there a single chain of custody, and will they sign an NDA? Work routed across a blind supplier network is harder to trace than a single in-house facility.
Honest engineering guidance
The best suppliers steer you away from bad process choices — they'll tell you when injection molding or machining fits your part better. A vendor who claims printing is always the answer is selling, not advising.
