Why Manufacturing Teams Print Their Tooling

When NOT to Print the Fixture

Some tooling should stay metal, and we'll say so: fixtures reacting heavy machining forces or very high clamping loads; precision datum surfaces beyond reamed-feature capability (though a hybrid — printed body, machined-metal datum pins — often wins on cost); fixtures living in ovens or processes approaching 150°C; and ESD-controlled applications requiring certified dissipative materials. The right answer is sometimes a hybrid, and the review is part of the quote.

Are printed fixtures accurate enough for production?
For the large majority of assembly, inspection, and processing fixtures, yes: ±0.2 mm or ±0.5% as-printed, with critical locating features drilled or reamed tighter. Where a datum truly needs machined-metal precision, a hybrid fixture (printed body, metal pins) usually beats an all-metal one on cost and lead time.
How long do printed fixtures last on a production floor?
Glass filled and carbon fiber nylons are the same material families specified for molded structural components — designed correctly for the load, fixtures serve through shift after shift of production use. When one wears or the process changes, the replacement is a reprint, not a project.
Can you duplicate a fixture across multiple stations?
Yes — that's where the fleet shines. A set of ten identical fixtures prints in parallel with locked parameters, so every station gets the same tool at once.
Do you install threaded hardware?
