Custom ASA 3D Printing Services — UV & Weather Resistant Parts

ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the top choice for outdoor and UV-exposed applications. It delivers ABS-like strength with full UV stability, meaning your parts won't yellow, crack, or degrade in sunlight. Our ASA Carbon Fiber variant adds exceptional rigidity for structural outdoor components.

Why Choose ASA for Your Parts?

If your part lives outdoors, ASA should be your first consideration. Unlike ABS which yellows and becomes brittle under UV exposure, ASA maintains its color and mechanical properties even after years of direct sunlight. It's the same class of polymer used in automotive exterior trim, outdoor signage, and garden equipment.

At Chatelet Manufacturing, ASA is one of our most-printed materials — particularly for clients in construction, agriculture, marine, and outdoor equipment industries. We regularly produce column protectors, housing covers, mounting brackets, and sensor enclosures that need to perform outdoors year-round in Florida's harsh UV environment.

Advantages
  • Outstanding UV resistance — won't yellow or degrade in sunlight
  • Excellent weather resistance — rain, humidity, temperature cycling
  • ABS-level mechanical strength and impact resistance
  • Good chemical resistance to many industrial chemicals
  • Maintains color stability over years of outdoor exposure
  • Can be sanded, primed, and painted for custom finishes
  • Wide color availability including custom color matching
Considerations
  • Slightly higher cost than standard ABS
  • Produces fumes during printing — enclosed printer required
  • Not food-safe — use PETG for food contact
  • Lower impact strength than nylon or polycarbonate
  • Can warp on large flat parts without proper print setup

Common Applications for 3D Printed ASA

Outdoor Enclosures & Housings
Weather-proof enclosures for electronics, sensors, cameras, and IoT devices that live outside 24/7. No UV degradation.
Construction & Jobsite Parts
Column protectors, cable management, mounting brackets, and protective covers for construction equipment exposed to the elements.
Automotive Exterior Components
Mirror housings, vent covers, trim pieces, and bezels that need to withstand sun exposure without color shift or brittleness.
Agricultural Equipment
Replacement parts, guards, and custom fittings for farm equipment that operates outdoors in all seasons.
Marine & Boat Components
Rod holders, electronics mounts, cable pass-throughs, and custom fittings for marine environments with UV and salt exposure.
Signage & Display
Outdoor signage components, display stands, and branded elements that maintain appearance year after year.

ASA Carbon Fiber Variant

For applications that need outdoor UV resistance plus exceptional stiffness and reduced weight, our ASA Carbon Fiber composite delivers. Chopped carbon fibers reinforce the ASA matrix, providing:

ASA-CF Additional Benefits
  • 40–60% higher stiffness than standard ASA
  • Improved dimensional stability — less warping and shrinkage
  • Better heat deflection temperature
  • Lightweight — reduced material density vs. standard ASA
  • Professional matte carbon fiber surface finish
  • Ideal for drone components, structural brackets, and lightweight outdoor frames

ASA-CF is particularly popular for drone and UAV components, where UV resistance, low weight, and structural rigidity are all critical. We produce drone arms, camera mounts, and airframe components in ASA-CF regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASA is specifically engineered for long-term outdoor use. Parts maintain their color and mechanical properties for 5+ years of direct sun exposure. It's the same polymer family used in automotive exterior components that last the life of the vehicle.
ASA and ABS have very similar mechanical properties — comparable strength, temperature resistance, and printability. The key difference is UV stability. ABS yellows and becomes brittle in sunlight within months, while ASA resists UV degradation indefinitely. ASA costs slightly more but is essential for any outdoor application.
Yes — ASA accepts paint very well. It can be sanded smooth, primed, and painted with automotive or industrial paints. ASA can also be acetone vapor smoothed for an injection-mold-like surface finish before painting.
Choose ASA-CF when you need outdoor UV resistance PLUS high stiffness, low weight, or minimal warping. It's ideal for structural components, drone parts, large flat panels, and applications where dimensional accuracy matters. Standard ASA is fine for general outdoor use where maximum rigidity isn't critical.
We stock ASA in black, white, and grey. Other colors are available on request with slightly longer lead times. ASA-CF is only available in black due to the carbon fiber content, but it has an attractive matte finish.
